Domyouji: The Once and Future Dork

Domyouji Tsukasa isn't your typical leading man. He isn't even your typical anti-hero. But I love him, both the Meteor Garden reincarnation and ESPECIALLY the Hana Yori Dango character. Yes, he is arrogant, crazy and violent. But he's incredibly clueless, and he is this biggest dork that ever dorked wuss with a child-like heart. His combination of nastiness and naivete are made of AWESOME.

So I present to you proof of Domyouji's evilness and dorkiness, and why it has sank me deeper into the pits of fangirliness. (Note: this is also a recap of the live action drama Hana Yori Dango. Expect tons of pictures, rambling side comments and too much swooning.

Let's start with the cast of characters:

This is MAKINO TSUKUSHI:
She is the odd man out in a school where everybody is filthy rich. Her only goal in life is to go through high school without making any waves.
The students of the school, aside from being filthy rich, are notorious bullies.
They take their cue from a group of guys who call themselves FLOWER FOUR, or F4 for short.

I kid you not. Why on earth would anyone think that putting the word FLOWER anywhere near their name would inspire awe and fear in the hearts of lesser beings?

Anyway, F4 gets the token dramatic entrance:
The bastards heartthrobs are introduced one by one:

MIMASAKA AKIRA would only date women 10 years older than him. His family has ties to the Japanese mafia. Scary.

NISHIKADO SOUJIROH is the ultimate ladies' man and is totally into tea ceremonies.

HANAZAWA RUI is the cold, mysterious member.


DOMYOUJI TSUKASA is the heir to this insanely rich family in Japan. He's also the meanest and most arrogant of the F4, which made him their default leader.

And yeah, lame name nothwithstanding, they do inspire awe and fear in the hearts of lesser beings, and the occasional panty-throwing from swooning ladies.
Makino doesn't want any of that.
But even if the bullying bothered her, she chose to keep a low profile.

In the end, Makino can only be who she really is - someone with a strong sense of justice. When her new friend accidentally dumps her lunch tray into Domyouji,
he took of his shirt (a bit irrelevant, but he just looks hot when he did it. hee.),
and bullied new friend.
Makino tried to intervene politely -
and got herself a red notice.

Thereafter the students made life hell for her:

They stole her school desk and threw it out, dump water and trash on her, and put snakes on her locker.
A group of students even tried to sexually assault her. To top it off, the friend she defended wouldn't even talk to her. Ungrateful bitch.

Yet Makino endures. Despite the cruelty of the other students, she found comfort in Rui's company. Even if he's a bit aloof, she was fine with that. Oohh... someone's falling.

Domyouji, on the other hand, tried to take pleasure in Makino's woes. But he can't be truly happy, because this guy, he's got ISSUES. Deep inside, he's just a lonely guy trying to escape a crappy fashion sense home life. You know he just wants to be lurved. Ehem.
He's just a lonely guy who happens to BEAT UP random guys when he feels like it is a little bit alone.Things came into head when Domyouji himself bullied Makino
by throwing her lunch on the floor
and STAMPING DOWN ON HER TEMPURA.

How can any tempura survive that pointy shoes?

Makino, recalling how her parents carefully prepared her lunch, finally snapped.

She told him he was a BAKA who never earned money for himself;
shouted "don't be so full of it!"
and PUNCHED THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS OUT OF HIM.
Awesome.

She declared war on the F4.

Domyouji, obviously, was shocked. So shocked, in fact, that he stayed down on the floor TOGETHER WITH HIS DIGNITY for a very long time.

He apparently forgot that he was the Almighty Domyouji and how dare that commoner make a fool out of him? Surely a revenge is in the works?

Domyouji's idea of revenge was to kidnap Makino
and GIVE HER A MAKE-OVER. No kidding.
Makino refused to be bribed.
Domyouji was left to ponder in silence why his Almighty self was no match to this poor girl and whether the make-over was really worth 10 million yen when it wasn't all dramatic.
If at first you don't succeed, maybe it's time to bank on Makino's "people-saving-thing".

Domyouji sat like a king in his throne at the cafeteria while his minions throw things at Makino's friend.
Enter Makino with a broom as her weapon and demanded that Domyouji leave friend alone. Domyouji said that it was Makino who declared war; this is war.
Somebody threw a sauce bottle at Makino; she deftly swiped it with the broom AND THIS IS THE SCENE THAT HAS ME SHRIEKING LIKE CRAZY! The sauce landed near Domyouji and spilled a few drops on his shoes.
Domyouji's hips swaggered towards Makino and ever arrogantly asked her to LICK IT OFF. Damn. It's supposed to be disgusting, I know, but it sounded so sexy coming from him. WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME?
Makino was shocked. Domyouji offered his condition: if she'll lick it off, he'll call the game off. Makino seem tempted to accept; Domyouji seem to notice her conflict; he looked conflicted himself (other students chanting: "lick it off! lick it off!").
I am loving Domyouji's expression throughtout this scene.

Rui suddenly materialized and saved the day for both Makino and Domyouji.
Domyouji couldn't help but think about the strong-willed Makino. Squee!
Makino couldn't help but pine for Rui.Makino got herself invited to a party for Rui's hot girlfriend. Domyouji and his hips just had to steal a glance at Makino. You boy, totally lacking in subtlety.
Makino got liquids dumped on her some more. Domyouji tried to intervene but Rui got to her first and gave Makino his handkerchief.
Hot girl loaned Makino a gown. Rui said she's cute.
Domyouji is JEALOUS.All of a sudden there was a fight (what do you expect? Domyouji is present.)
which bizarrely ended with Makino and Domyouji on the floor, KISSING. I - what?
A day after and Makino was still horrified at the accident.
The conversation between the F4 (minus Rui) is made of EPIC WIN.

Domyouji vehemently denied that he likes Makino.
The other two tease him about his FIRST KISS. Domyouji was all "THAT'S NOT MY FIRST KISS!"
F2: Then when did you do it?

Domyouji: What?F2: If yesterday wasn't your first kiss, then WHEN was your first?

Domyouji: Huh? Let me see... 2 days ago?
You dork! Do you even know what a kiss is?!

Domyouji and his car ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE materialized in front of Makino. He was all surprised and happy to bump into her,
as if all those water-dumping, tempura-stamping, sauce-almost licking events NEVER HAPPENED.

He offered her a ride back to school and Makino ran away from the dummy, who for all she know is plotting her murder. The dummy, still clueless, failed to understand her reaction AND CHASED AFTER HER. Them running in the streets is made of AWESOME WIN.
Domyouji got himself punched by his older sister.
I love it when Domyouji is getting his ass kicked.
Domyouji saw Makino and Rui have a moment.
He strutted into a bar and punch random guys.
Then screamed. It's his way of dealing with his jealousy.

In spite his jealousy, Domyouji was still shocked and hurt by Rui's decision to go to France.
He's still pretty when he's trying hard not to cry. Sigh.

The other F4 members gave him an apple and he threw it over to Rui and everything is fine and rosy again with F4. Boys.Makino changed her mind a bit about Domyouji after witnessing this scene.
I already changed my mind about this guy a long time ago and at this point wonder the lows I could still sink my self into.

Big sis quoted Hemingway's "A Farewell To Arms" to Domyouji,
causing him to have an epiphany.
Big sis offered more advice to little bro, and Domyouji both get what she said and MISUNDERSTOOD what she said. How is that possible?
The following day, Domyouji took into heart the things his sister told him
and CIRCLED AROUND MAKINO. Apparently that's how he understood the literal Japanese translation of "Patience is a virtue".
And then HE ASKED HER OUT ON A DATE.
Or more accurately, he just threw Makino some place and time and hastily departed.
He did all of this, of course, in the presence of all the students, who simultaneously let out screams of incredulity.
Makino followed Domyouji and asked what he was trying to say.
Domyouji misunderstood AGAIN what was being said to him and proceed to mangle Hemingway's name and TOLD MAKINO OFF FOR NOT READING. Oh, Domyouji, you're such a hot, stupid boy.
So what happens when sworn enemies date? More swooning, more side comments, more capslocking to follow.

Find out what scene made me put a fist in my mouth to keep myself from shrieking and find out why the following lines are PURE GOLD:
